Requirements to gain national certification for a currently state licensed EMR can be found here.  

If your EMS certification expired and you are not a currently state licensed EMR, you must complete a new state-approved Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course and complete the cognitive and psychomotor examinations. 

Lapsed 0-24 Months

If you did not meet all recertification requirements by the expiration date, the National EMS certification is considered lapsed. Entry requirements for a currently state licensed EMT can be found on the EMT page (first bullet in the Notes section).

Reentry into the National Registry may be granted to those who previously held, but do not currently hold, a state EMT license or a National EMT Certification the candidate completes:

• 40 hours of continuing education that meets all requirements of the 2016 National Continued Competency Program within the past two years
• A state administered practical examination
• The National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Computer-Based (Cognitive) Examination
• And holds current CPR-BLS for "Healthcare Provider" or equivalent credential

Lapsed More Than 2 Years

Reentry into the National Registry may be granted to those who previously held, but do not currently hold, a state EMT license or a National EMT Certification provided the candidate completes:

• 40 hours of continuing education that meets all requirements of the 2016 National Continued Competency Program within the past two years
• A state administered practical examination
• The National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Computer-Based (Cognitive) Examination
• And holds current CPR-BLS for "Healthcare Provider" or equivalent credential.

EMT Late Renewal

If the renewal application was not submitted prior to the March 31 deadline, the EMT may pay a $50 late application fee and submit the application until April 30. However, all continuing education requirement must have been satisfied prior to March 31.

• The National Registry Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Computer-Based (Cognitive) and Skills-Based (Psychomotor) Examinations
• And holds current CPR-BLS for "Healthcare Provider" or equivalent credential

Lapsed More Than 2 Years

Reentry into the National Registry may be granted to those who previously held, but do not currently hold, a state AEMT license or a National AEMT Certification provided the candidate completes:

• 50 hours of continuing education that meets all requirements of the 2016 National Continued Competency Program within the past two years
• The National Registry Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Computer-Based (Cognitive) and Skills-Based (Psychomotor) Examinations
• And holds current CPR-BLS for "Healthcare Provider" or equivalent credential

• 60 hours of continuing education that meets all requirements of the 2016 National Continued Competency Program within the past two years
  • Completion of a DOT Paramedic (NRP) Training Program must be completed after January 1, 1977.
  • All candidates for National Registry’s National EMS Certification at the Paramedic level whose Paramedic program began on or after January 1, 2013 must have successfully completed Paramedic education from an accredited program sponsored by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or one who held a valid Letter of Review (LOR) issued by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).
• The National Registry National Registry Paramedic (NRP) Computer-Based (Cognitive) and Skills-Based (Psychomotor) Examinations
• And holds current CPR-BLS for "Healthcare Provider" or equivalent credential

Lapsed More Than 2 Years

Reentry into the National Registry may be granted to those who previously held, but do not currently hold, a state Paramedic license or a National Paramedic Certification provided the candidate completes:

• 60 hours of continuing education that meets all requirements of the 2016 National Continued Competency Program within the past two years
  • Completion of a DOT Paramedic (NRP) Training Program must be completed after January 1, 1977.
